Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the impact of environmental factors on public health and to evaluate the role of the general practitioner (GP) in preventive medicine within the Bulgarian context. Materials and Methods: A survey was conducted among 60 respondents of various ages, genders, and educational backgrounds. The study utilized a questionnaire method consisting of 14 questions. Results: The sample included 35 women and 25 men. 63.3% of the participants believe that pollution negatively affects health. The results indicate a high level of public awareness regarding the harmful effects of pollution, with polluted air, water, and chemicals in food identified as the primary factors of concern. A significant difference was established in the views between urban and rural residents, as well as between individuals with different levels of education. Despite high public sensitivity, the role of the GP in environmental health education is rated as highly limited. Conclusion: The study highlights the need for systemic integration of environmental risks into the preventive practice of primary healthcare and the enhancement of the GP's role as a key agent of change.
