Synopsis on the connection between professional stress and cardiovascular diseases

Abstract

Professional stress is a widespread phenomenon with significant sequelae for the health status of population and it is increasingly recognized as an important factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This advanced synoptic review synthesizes findings from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, cohort studies and mechanistic studies. They show sequential connections between adverse working conditions (e.g., high burden at work, low control, imbalance between efforts and rewards) and increased prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD), insult and cardiovascular mortality after adjustment for traditional risk factors. In this review we are focused on the epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, specific CVDs, models of professional stress, modifying factors, assessment approaches, interventions and clinical implications, as well as the global perspectives and recommendations for prevention and policy. A critical analysis on the connection between professional stress and CVDs in the last five years, the known and unknown facts and recommendations for performance of future research studies was performed. The management of professional stress as a modifiable risk factor is of a significant importance for reduction of global burden of CVDs.
