Esophageal atresia associated with congenital esophageal stricture in a neonate – a case report

Congenital esophageal stricture (CES) is a rare anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical manifestations depend on the location and severity of the stenosis. In around 14% of cases, it is associated with esophageal atresia. We present a clinical case of a patient with esophageal atresia, in whom congenital esophageal stricture was diagnosed during clinical follow-up. Serial balloon dilations were performed with good clinical and radiological results. During one of the dilations, a partial tear of the esophagus was observed, which was treated conservatively. Improvement was achieved and the patient transitioned to a full oral intake. Persistent feeding difficulties after correction of esophageal atresia necessitated the exclusion of BEC. Early recognition and a multidisciplinary approach are essential for optimizing the care of patients with combined congenital anomalies of the esophagus.
