A rare case of intramural duodenal duplication in a 9-year-old boy
Keywords:
gastrointestinal duplication, endoscopy, surgical treatmentAbstract
Duplication cyst was first described by Fitz in 1884, and the nature of the condition was refined by Gross in 1953. It is a rare congenital anomaly that forms during the embryonic period of alimentary tract development. Digestive duplication cyst occurs most commonly in the distal ileum, followed by the esophagus and duodenum. Duodenal duplication represents only 2% to 12% of digestive tract duplications and has an estimated prevalence of less than 1 per 100,000 live births. This case report describes a 9-year-old boy with a duodenal duplication cyst presenting itself as an accidental finding on ultrasonography of the abdomen in the setting of acute gastroenteritis. A review of literature is also presented to understand its clinical features that enable early diagnosis and also to discuss possible methods of treatment – surgical or endoscopic.
