Abstract

Purpose and Subject: The aim of this study is to investigate the socio-demographic profile and motivation for training of midwifery students at the Faculty of Public Health, Medical University – Plovdiv. The research focuses on students' attitudes towards their chosen profession, the factors influencing their choice, and their plans for future career development and continuing education. Materials and Methods: A voluntary and anonymous survey was conducted among students using a questionnaire. The study took place in 2025. The sample consisted of 120 students across all years of study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A high percentage of respondents (85.83%) were admitted to the midwifery program as their first choice. Key motivators included the desire for a prestigious profession, job security, and financial independence. More than 50% of the students plan to work in hospital settings, while 20.13% expressed interest in independent midwifery practice. A significant majority intend to live and practice in Bulgaria. There is a high level of interest in further qualifications, with 83.34% of respondents wishing to pursue a Master's degree or specialization. The most preferred program is "Health Care Management" (45.54%). Conclusions: The study reveals a high level of awareness and ambition among future midwives. The scientific contribution lies in identifying emerging attitudes, such as the increased interest in management positions and independent midwifery practices, which are not yet widespread in our country. The results highlight the necessity for comprehensive policies to improve working conditions and retain these motivated professionals within the national healthcare system.
