Adolescence – an essential stage of human individual development

Abstract

Adolescence represents a critical period in human development, marked by profound biological, psychological, and social changes. It constitutes a key stage in the overall maturation of the individual. The aim of this literature review is to summarize, analyze, and interpret contemporary international and national research on the socio-emotional dimensions of adolescence – including identity formation, social transitions and relationships, self-regulation, sexuality, risk behaviors, and morality – with a particular focus on the latest trends. The methodology is based on a systematic review of scholarly publications sourced from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, WHO, Scopus, APA PsycINFO, as well as relevant national Bulgarian publications. Discussion: Socio-emotional changes during adolescence are manifested in increasingly complex interactions with peers and family. Adolescents tend to distance themselves from their parents and form independent social networks, with friendships and romantic relationships becoming central to their socialization. This period is also characterized by attempts to develop a more mature personal identity, often involving critical examination of social norms and family values. Conclusion: The processes of physical maturation, identity formation, the establishment of social relationships, development of self-control, and internalization of moral values are all crucial for a successful transition to adulthood. The risks associated with low self-regulation, sexual behavior, and delinquency necessitate comprehensive interventions grounded in contemporary best practices. There is a pressing need for interdisciplinary strategies and enhanced prevention efforts within both school and broader social contexts to promote the health and well-being of adolescents.
