Abstract

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of adverse outcomes for maternal and fetal. Hepatitis E particularly in the second and third trimesters can lead to fulminant liver failure, postpartum hemorrhage and maternal mortality. HEV infection is linked to a higher incidence of miscarriage (spontaneous abortion), stillbirth, preterm delivery and vertical transmission. The uniqueness of hepatitis E lies in its transformation from a relatively self-limited acute viral hepatitis in a severe illness in pregnant women, mainly in infection HEV genotype 1 in endemic areas. In developing countries the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality is high. The mechanisms of liver injury during pregnancy are still not fully understood. HEV replication has also been reported to occur in extra-hepatic sites such as the placenta.
