Safe patient care – a main priority in the work of a nurse

In order to obtain information about the quality of healthcare provided by nurses, it is necessary to analyze safety as a basic component of quality, reflecting the degree of prevention of potential risk in the provision of medical care. Safe patient care is of key importance for his well-being and is a guarantee for achieving quality of healthcare services. The article identifies the most common errors made in nursing practice, emphasizing the need to prevent these errors to achieve patient safety and improve the quality of healthcare. Objective: To study and analyze the most common errors made in nursing practice, in order to ensure their prevention, as a guarantee for achieving safe patient care and improving the quality of healthcare services. Materials and methods: The opinion of 117 nurses working in the therapeutic departments of the Hristo Botev Hospital, Vratsa and the First Private Hospital – Vratsa was investigated through an anonymous survey. The study was conducted in the period November 2024 – February 2025. The results were processed with the statistical computer program SPSS v. 20 and Microsoft Excel. Results and discussion: The most common errors made by nurses are physical errors (51.3%) – psychological stress, physical fatigue; technical errors (19.7%), including faulty equipment, lack of consumables and materials, etc.; errors due to negligence (18.8%) – carelessness, negligence, arrogance, inaction; professional (10.2%) – insufficient training, ignorance, incompetence. Conclusion: It is necessary to carry out a systematic analysis by health managers of the errors made in nursing practice in order to develop effective preventive measures as a guarantee for achieving safe patient care and improving the quality of health services.
