From stereotypes to empathy: application of the cultural competence model in a specific clinical context

In contemporary nursing practice, cultural competence is established as a key factor for providing safe and effective care. Nurses work with patients from diverse ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds, which requires an adaptive and considerate approach, as the lack of cultural sensitivity may lead to misunderstandings, reduced trust, and lower satisfaction with care. This report presents the process of transition from stereotypes to empathy through the application of a cultural competence model in a specific clinical case. The model was applied to systematically observe and adapt care to the cultural and emotional needs of a 45-year-old Ukrainian refugee admitted to the emergency department, incorporating cultural awareness, knowledge, skills, cultural encounters, and the willingness to maintain cultural sensitivity. The implementation of this approach enabled the overcoming of language and cultural barriers, the building of trust, and the improvement of communication, while at the same time enhancing the quality of care provided. The case highlights the importance of dynamic cultural competence and the necessity of preparing medical staff to work with vulnerable and multicultural groups.
